The ABC’S of PTO Activities
ART ROOM VOLUNTEER SHOW: Assist the art teacher with preparation and display of art work in the Art Room during school hours.
ART SHOW: Help Dr. Cross prepare for the Spring art show held in mid-May. Duties include mounting artwork on display boards, decorating the gym, serving refreshments during the show, and dismantling the show.
ART TO REMEMBER: Help collect and place orders for this art fundraiser.
BOOK FAIR: Work at the school book fair . Help is needed both during school hours and in the evening.
BOOK ROOM: Responsible for organizing and re-shelving materials in the Resource Room as well as stamping, taping and labeling new books that may arrive during the year.
CLINIC HELPER: Make up baggies of ice for injuries, organize schedule of volunteers for the special health screenings and for blanket washing.
COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMITTEE: Provides students and families with the opportunity to participate in one-time and ongoing service projects that benefit our community.
FALL FAMILY OUTING: A family picnic held at Norwich this year. to meet other Norwich families. Help needed with set up, clean up, and registration.
HOSPITALITY: Prepare and bring in food for various PTO functions, conference week dinners, teacher appreciation activities and other special events. Want to help out or donate items for our fall conference meal ?
INTERMEDIATE YEAR END PARTY: Help plan, organize, and supervise the year-end party for the intermediate students. Party is during school hours during the last week of school.
INTERSCHOOL COUNCIL: This is a group of elected representatives from each school in the district. They meet monthly with the school superintendent to share information about events and issues that affect their respective schools. At each PTO meeting, the members of this committee then report on the council’s activities. Everyone is welcome to attend Interschool Council meetings, which are held on the third Tuesday of the month. For information about meeting locations, refer to the “Hilliard School District Meeting Calendar” in this directory.
KINDERGARTEN CONNECTION: This program provides an orientation meeting for all new kindergarten parents to meet the principal, K/1 teachers and PTO representatives. This program helps to familiarize new students and parents with what they may expect during the first few days and weeks of school.
KINDERGARTEN SCREENING: Two to three volunteers are needed for morning or afternoon to assist the incoming kindergartens during screening on a single day in April.
LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER ASSISTANT- Help Mrs. Alexander and Mrs. Mullin in the library media center during school hours.
MARKET DAY:A monthly fundraiser sale of delicious grocery food items. Help unpack food, fill and check orders from 5:30 to 8:00 pm on day per month (primarily Monday nights). Assistance is also needed to make frequent buyer and reminder phone calls once a month. Items can also be ordered by using the form or going on-line at http://www.marketday.com .
MUSICAL PROGRAMS (SCENERY): Assist Ms. Wenner and Mrs. Baker with designing and creating the scenery for your child’s Team Music Program.
PTO FUNDRAISERS: We will have fundraisers throughout the year. One will be a MUMPKINS Sale during October and there will be a Spring Flower Sale with pick-up in May.
PUBLISHING SHOP: Norwich’s Publishing Shop is open for business!
The Publishing Shop is a PTO funded room that all students can use to create book covers and then bind their school work into a ‘published book’ , complete with a dedication page! Our students love to publish their writings and PTO volunteers have a great time helping the budding authors.. There are two ways to help: 1. Work in the publishing shop 10 am-12 pm or 1 pm-3 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. 2. Make covers for the books at home with supplies that are bagged and ready for you to take home.

ROOM PARENTS: Coordinate 2 classroom parties per year (the winter party and end-of-the-year party) This person is the liaison between the teachers and the parent volunteers for these parties.
SHOEBOX SCIENCE: ShoeBoxScience Experiments are going home!
ShoeBoxScience is a creative way to increase our students’ interest in science. Students receive a plastic shoe box filled with instructions and all the supplies needed to do simple science experiments at home- it’s a great family activity. Boxes come home 6 times a year.Students in K/1 and in 2/3 can sign up for ShoeBoxScience. Please contact Monika Winer at monikalw@columbus.rr.com to enroll. Intermediate students will participate in Matter Day in 2012.ShoeBoxScience is completely funded by your PTO is run entirely by parent volunteers. Volunteers are needed to: 1) help refill and distribute the experiments to students on Wed. mornings (from 9-10:30) from October-April. 2. Restock supplies.
SPRING FLOWER SALE: The PTO offers a variety of beautiful flowers in flats or baskets for pre-sale purchase in conjunction with a local greenhouse. A percentage of the profit from this sale benefits the many programs that the PTO funds. The orders are taken in April and arrive for delivery just before Mother’s Day.
SUPER GAMES: Staff various stations for a morning/afternoon shift in late May.
SPEECH, TITLE READING/MATH and SPECIAL EDUCATION: Assist teachers in those areas with copying, cutting, laminating, book organization, and miscellaneous small jobs.
TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK: Be on a committee to plan special activities during one week in May in appreciation of the staff and/or bake or cook items for the staff.
TEST WEEK SNACKS: The PTO provides a snack for students after they are finished with their state required standardized testing for the day.
VISION AND HEARING SCREENING: Help with the vision and hearing screenings in the fall during school hours.
HOP-A-THON: Walk with your child’s class during the Norwich Walk-a-thon in October 2011.
WELLNESS ACTIVITIES: The wellness committee meets once a month before school to plan various projects. Parents can sign up to help with occasional nutrition, fitness, safety, or other health-related projects as needed.
WINTER FAMILY FAIR: This is a fun-filled event Help is needed to staff games, ticket tables, and food booths at this family event with food, fun, activities, classes and raffles!
VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers are always needed. If you have an hour or a day and would like to spend it at Norwich, there is a place for you. You could be on the playground helping organize kickball, in the classroom, or out on a field trip. If you would like to volunteer, you would need to get a HCS background check. Please call the HCS Central Office for times or more information at 614-921-7099. If you don’t know how to get started, call the Committee Chair for any of the committees that look fun to you, or ask your child’s teacher about ways you could help in the classroom.
